Bloglove: Luxury Edition

It's been forever since I've rec'ed any blogs, and for that I apologize!  There are many, many high-end/luxury beauty blogs out there, but today I want to draw attention to three of the most prolific and popular.  I'm defining "luxury beauty blog" as being one that features exclusively high-end products, with a focus on brands like Le Métier de Beauté, Chantecaille, Chanel, Dior, Burberry, Guerlain, etc.  As in: brands that I will never be able to afford.  That doesn't stop me from drooling over the products, though!

Café Makeup is written by another Amy, and the products are modeled by Liz.  The pictures are phenomenal, and she often compares the products she's reviewing to other products in her collection.  Amy wrote a few months ago that she would be closing the blog down, but fortunately the blogging bug wasn't cured, so she's still posting, though somewhat less frequently.  Here's the recent post on the new Le Métier de Beauté Lip Cremes for this fall; doesn't it make you just die?

The Beauty Look Book, written by Lina, is a wealth of information on luxe brands.  She also takes gorgeous pictures, and usually does comparison swatches of the product she's reviewing next to other similar products in her collection.  She's not afraid to say when she feels a product falls short, and reviews mostly neutral-oriented products.  Here's a post on shimmery browns for fall, with beautiful swatches: yum.

Messy Wands, by Xiao, is one of the newer beauty blogs, and it is simply awesome.  She has product reviews with amazing swatches and pictures and incredibly helpful tutorials with, again, amazing pictures.  She's funny and smart and writes beautifully, and she always responds quickly and helpfully to comments (which I know because I have commented on her blog, because her posts are just so wonderful that I can't not!).  She's to blame for my wanting LMdB Lip Cremes (all of them, and for $36 a pop, even one is out of my price range, goldarnit; see here for her post on mixing them to create new shades, and then go and read all of the other LMdB Lip Creme posts!) and makes me wish I knew her in person so we could be best friends and she could teach me how to be beautiful.  Okay, yes, I have a beauty crush on her.  Once you read her blog, you'll see why!

Amy and Liz are both fair/light-skinned, while Lina and Xiao are Asian and somewhat darker, so you can compare swatches between them all to see how a product looks on different skintones.  And proceed to weep at how you're a grad student with loans and cannot justify a $47 lipstick...or maybe that's just me.  Regardless, the blogs are fantastic, and I cannot recommend them highly enough.

What are your favorite luxury beauty blogs?  Have you read any of the ones above?  Do share!

Bloglove 4.0

Karla, of KarlaSugar, is amazing.  She swatches entire lines and collections and shares the pretty pictures with the intertubes.  She's got great arms for swatching, too––no bright blue veins like yours truly.  She does (almost?) entirely high-end products, so she's a great resource if you're placing an online order and want to give yourself as good a chance as possible at dropping a chunk of change on a color you actually like.  She's also funny and a very good writer, and her color descriptions are spot-on.  You should really be browsing her site instead of reading this paragraph.  Go!  Now!  Sheesh.

Bloglove: Nail Polish Edition

In honor of the slew of nail polish posts heading your way, I'd like to direct you to a few of my favorite polish blogs, because their pictures and selection are far, far superior to mine.  Most of these blogs also feature makeup, but polish is the focus, and they have gorgeous pictures.  Feast your eyes!

Other Blags, Part II

After a series of incredibly funny, insightful posts, I figured it was time to give some credit to the wonderful ladies at Pink Sith.  Elvira and Joeybunny are the lovely ladies behind the mask; Elvira does most of the makeupy posts and Joeybunny focuses on fragrance, though she also reviews beauty products from time to time.  They're very witty (Elvira is the source for my new favorite catchphrases "makeup is always greener dysfunction" and "beautyblogitis", both of which I suffer from), and their posts often make me lol (literally).  Joeybunny has a blog of her own, Beauty, Bacon, Bunnies, that's very entertaining and informative as well.  You should definitely check it out :-)

Birthday!

Today is my birthday!  I am officially 22.  Weird.  Anyways, there's already been a post today that I wrote and scheduled yesterday, but I also wanted to share a couple links to other blogs from the past few days that I found entertaining and/or useful:

Eyebrow shading on Messy Wands: http://messywands.blogspot.com/2011/07/tutorial-eyebrow-shading.html
This is an extremely helpful, detailed tutorial for how to shade your eyebrows, with beautiful pictures and Messy Wands' signature wit and insight.  I'll talk about her blog more in a future bloglove post, but for now: Go read!  She's funny, she's smart, she's got impeccable style, and she focuses on the high-end things I can't afford (and makes me want them so badly).

Too Faced Shadow Insurance review by Elvira on Pink Sith: http://www.pinksith.com/2011/07/too-faced-shadow-insurance.html
I've never used TFSI myself, but I love this post for the numerous acronyms she comes up with for common beauty afflictions, and how incredibly accurate they are for my life.  These include "makeup is always greener dysfunction", which is the urge to try other products even when you love the ones you have, and "beautyblogitis", which is the side effect of reading beauty blogs––you want to buy everything!  There are a few more, and it's very entertaining to read her explanations of them.  Of course, now I've got a lemming for TFSI...damn you, beautyblogitis!

And, last but not least, a post from Shannon at Lipstick Musings on why you should never buy things you haven't fully researched: http://www.lipstickmusings.com/2011/07/rant-of-week-duwop-twilight-lip-venom.html#more
Always such a bummer!  Posts like this, however, are a good antidote to beautyblogitis.

I hope you're having a lovely Friday, and that you've got something exciting planned for the weekend (even if it's just taking a nap––in my world, that is very exciting)!

Other Blags

I find beauty blogs to be an endless source of inspiration, humor, discovery, and experimentation.  When I'm feeling sad, I go back and look at the archives of some of my favorites, because few things cheer me up as much as seeing pretty pictures of makeup (Jesus, I sound like a stereotype!).  I've decided to try and share with you some of them and why I think they're great, in the hopes that you'll find them as enjoyable as I do!  I'll start with a couple of the biggest beauty blogs: Temptalia and Makeup and Beauty Blog.
